"Being a high school dropout, drug addict, a teen runaway.. etc. was all in my decision to make, but the day I voluntarily accepted help is one of the days I am most thankful for in my life. This place truly works miracles. I am now 2 1/2 years sober, living on my own, & sharing my story with hundreds locally."

How We Help Young Women Heal

Zion Hills Academy is a residential treatment center for young women from ages 12 through 17 that is expert in treating complex trauma and attachment related issues including Reactive Attachment Disorder.  We have carefully chosen and utilize research-based therapies and treatment methodologies that have proven most effective for trauma and attachment related issues.  Our philosophy is that therapy occurs in the therapist’s office but treatment occurs at all other times and our program is designed to take advantage of every opportunity for healing.  Additionally, we provide a fully accredited educational program that allows students to remediate past problems and credit deficiencies as well as graduate from high school and prepare for college. Our research-based therapy and methodologies combined with an environment based on unconditional love makes Zion Hills Academy one of the best places in the country for young women to heal.

Research Based Programming

Research indicates that young women struggling with complex trauma and attachment issues do not respond well to the traditional approaches and therapies employed in many treatment programs even though nearly 40% of all young people in residential treatment are adopted and struggling with these issues.  Because of the unique struggles of the young women we treat, we have designed a program that employs evidence-based therapies and treatments that have proven to be the best practices for our population.  These therapies include initially addressing the needs that arise from being placed in a program, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), specialized Equine Therapy and other modalities as needed.  We also employ a number of other treatment opportunities including group therapies designed to deal with, among other things, addictions, emotional resiliency and a unique model of Positive Peer Culture.  We are constantly reviewing the research and adding the most up-to-date research supported programming available.

THERAPY

Research based therapy including:

  • Placement Specify Therapy
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EDMR)
  • Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)
  • Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Other therapies as needed
  • Group Therapies Including Smart Recovery, DBT, Emotional Resiliency and PPC

EDUCATION

AdvancED accredited school ensures that your daughter's education will continue during treatment. Any credits earned during her stay at Zion Hills Academy will transfer to any U.S. high school or college.

ENVIRONMENT

Therapy occurs in short durations in a therapist’s office or group. Treatment occurs during all other hours. As a result, Zion Hills uses, among other things, a combination of Dr. Larry Brendtro’s Positive Peer Culture and Dr. Karen Purvis’s Trust Based Relational Intervention to create a healing environment for our young women.

LOCATION

Ideally located in Cedar City, Utah near some of the nation's most beautiful national parks. We constantly use the beautiful surroundings and festivities of Cedar City to help our young women heal.
